Prince Harry of Britain has just tied knot with American actress Meghan Markle. Last Saturday, at St. Gorges Chapel in Windsor Castle, Harry and Meghan got married after their years long affair.
Built in 14th century, the chapel is under the control of the British monarch. Those who love the traditional elegant way of British royal ceremonies, may became a little disappointed with Saturday’s event. Because with the Chicago archbishop’s electrifying sermon and one by one lively musical performances by American artists, the wedding became something very much exceptional than the usuals in Britain.
While reaching the chapel from the west entrance, Meghan was welcomed by the fanfare of State Trumpeters. Then Meghan entered in the main hall. 10 bridesmaids and pageboys followed her.
Meghan Merkel was wearing an elegant white goun made by British designer Clare Waight Keller, who is the first female artistic director of Givenchy fashion house. The 16 feet long veil was attached by a diamond tiara lent by Queen Elizabeth for the wedding.
While Prince Charles was taking Meghan to the quire holding her hand, Prince Harry was already on the stage accompanied by his brother Prince William. Harry was seen a bit emotional. He was wearing a Blue and Royal frock coat. When Meghan stood beside him, the young prince commented to her, “You look amazing. I missed you.”
Then holding each others hand, Harry and Meghan listened the holy words from Bishop Michael Curry, who is the first African-American head of Episcopal church in United States.
Curry said in his speech, “We must discover the power of love, the power, the redemptive power of love.” He added, “And when we do that, we will make of this whole world a new world. But love is the only way.”
The speech of Michael Curry was totally exceptional from the traditional wedding sermons of Britain. After Curry’s speech was finished, Prince Harry was seen to say ‘wow’ to his newly wed wife. The expressions of other members of the royal family showed how much they too enjoyed this interesting change.
After that, the 20 members of The Kingdom Choir presented Ben W. King’s classic “Stand By Me.” It was also a kind of transformation in tradition.
There was notable difference in the wedding oath too. While Prince William and Kate Middleton picked oath from the 1662 ‘Book of Common Prayers’, Prince Harry and Meghan Merkel choose from the 2000 ‘Church of England Literacy’. Meghan Merkel didn’t have to take oath to ‘obey her husband’ as per traditional swearings, instead she promised to ‘love him, comfort him, honor him and protect him’. Prince Harry wore a wedding ring, which Prince William missed at his time.
When Prince Harry and Meghan Merkel were signing the register, Sheku Kanneh-Mason presented a cello performance. The ceremony ended with the Gospel “Amen/ This Little Light Of Mine.” This song became symbolic during the civil rights movement in United States.
As soon the ceremony ended, Harry and Meghan kissed each other at the entrance of the chapel. Then they took on a beautiful chariot driven by four grey horses. The newly wed couple set off on a procession through the streets of Windsor. They were greeted by thousands of well-wishers waiting throughout the roads.
Prince Harry’s two nephew and niece Prince George, Princess Charlotte and many of Harry’s other relatives waved goodbye to the couple outside St. George’s chapel.
More than 100,000 people gathered that day in Windsor’s streets to experience the historic event. Many of them were camped there for days, while some started to gather in the early morning.
Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Amal Clooney, Serena Williams, Idris Elba, James Blunt were among the celebrities attended the ceremony.
Royal family members including Princess Royal, Prince Andrew and his daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, Katherine’s sister Pippa Middletown and their parents were also present at the event.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in a lime silk dress and Prince Phillip were at the ceremony to bless the couple. Just few hours before the wedding, The Queen conferred the titles of Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel on Prince Harry, that makes Meghan Merkel to be known as Duchess of Sussex.
Lots of love and best wishes from us for the new couple of the British monarch.
